The HSJ brings you the thoughts of 3 different types of players hoping
that it will provide you the reader with the tools to make the climb to
Division 1 the Mecca of HUT play. AlexD is a veteran of playing the NHL game at all levels of competition, Ranked, EASHL, Team League, and HUT play the man knows the ins and outs of the game and game play. StormsquallMCS is a player who started playing NHL last year for the first time. His game has evolved from a guy who was using NHL 94 controls last year to a highly ranked division 1 player now. His game play metamorphosis has been fast and furious, his team building extraordinary, and his stance is to attack. Litrell is a division 1 player and a guy that rarely watches hockey in real life or cares much about it. A former Madden player, he switched to EA NHL and plays a somewhat unorthodox style of gameplay. One that is taken him a Division 1 standing. I recently sat down with these three Division 1 players looking for some insight on their keys to their climb to HUT Division 1. 1- What do you feel is the most important aspect in getting to Division 1 in HUT? AlexD-
Do collections so you can get
untradeable contracts, consumables and top players.
If you can avoid it, don't spend the contracts you
bought in the auctions to re-up your guys. What you
want is to get the collections done. You never know
when you'll pull a legend (I have pulled pavel bure
and Joe Sakic from collections packs). As for
untradeable contracts - what else are you gonna do
with these other than use them? You can't sell them
so use them to keep your core guys on the ice
together. Also, be sure to have plenty of "bargain
players" to fill in on those 4th lines and in the
3rd D pair. You can do well with guys like Darren
Helm centering your 4th line - fast guys who can get
in there, win races to the puck and create some
havoc. He's also a great guy to have killing
penalties for that reason. Another guy who shouldn't
be overlooked is Jagr. The 44 year old still has his
shot and his hands, even if he is a bit slow.
In sum, here's my method: build the best
team I can as cheaply as I can. Sure you need to
save up coins to get at least one top notch goalie
like Rinne or Varlamov, and a d man like Shea Weber
is a must. You need to spend some coinage. But don't
feel like you have to spend a million coins or
purchase 100 packs before you have a team that can
compete. But keep in mind that you will, absolutely,
100% need a top notch goaltender, and at least one
pair of elite defensemen to go with him.
And don't be afraid to splurge and buy a
few packs here or there. But buying packs is more of
a "pick me up", it is not a way to build a team.
StormsquallMCS-
Having a team that fits your
play style
along with line chemistry. I have played
with almost all the top players in hut and
not all of them fit my
playstyle.
Everyone is different in how they play the
game you just have to find those players
that fit you well. For example
Getzlaf
doesn't fit my style of play but with Alex
and Yodels (Two well respected guys in the
leagueonline
community) he fits for them. So to me that's
an important aspect to getting to D1. As for
chemistry, I always felt to compete at a
high level you need perfect line chemistry.
Litrell- Learn how and where to score from. Once you learn where the hot spots are, then defend that. 2- In competing against other Division 1 players what separates them from other players in other divisions? AlexD-
Defense and puck
movement, plain and
simple. You need to be
able to read the play
and be a step or two
ahead of the opponent.
Being strong on the
faceoff dot helps too.
StormsquallMCS- The big thing is maturity level. I mean when I was moving thru divisions I have gotten some ridiculous messages from guys I beat and from guys I lost too. As you get into D2 and D1 there seems to be much more respect amongst players. Litrell- There are a couple of different ones. First would be the defense, everyone in div 1 plays a full ice press which makes it pretty tough to get it out of your zone. Next they are all pretty good at poke checking and being able to knock you off the puck for a turnover. They also clog up the middle of your offensive ice and make you take tougher shots than say a div 2-3 guy. Then at the end of the game, you have to watch out for the quick 2-3 goal rush at the end of the game. 3-How has your game play changed from NHL 15 to NHL 16? AlexD-
I'm
much
more
conservative.
I
don't
just
rush
up
the
ice.
My
breakouts
involve
more
d to
d
passes,
more
lateral
movement
of
the
puck
to
get
it
up
to
the
forwards.
I
also
clog
the
neutral
zone
more,
and
have
my
center
play
higher
in
the
offensive
zone.
StormsquallMCS-
I have tried to become more defensive minded. I try to be more aggressive. I always have tried to move the puck around a bit more. That's something I never really have done before.
Litrell- Nothing has really changed a lot. I just played a lot more games than I played last year. I started playing the game on a regular basis in the middle of NHL 15. So I'm pretty new to the game altogether. I started NHL 15 with a all bronze team. 4-What are your go to offensive plays? AlexD-
Cross crease one timers, creating space for guys to get that short side snipe and tipped in point shots. And with loose pucks in front of the net, jam up on that right thumb stick because you never know when your guy is going to get lucky and pop one right in.
StormsquallMCS- My signature move is the tie up on face offs in the offensive zone. No secret there Litrell- No shocker here. Like the you tuber bacon country says. It's the year of the one timer. If your not trying to get the 1T then your probably not winning much. I also like the short side goal when guys try to stop the 1T. 5-What are your go to defensive plays, and/or strategies? AlexD-
Depends on who I'm playing. If the guy has a low hockey IQ and only tries for the one timer, or he tries to walk in all the time, I will collapse the you-know-what out of him. If the guy uses his points, I like to go tight point, but I'm fairly conservative with how hard I have my guys play - it's more of a "zone" than a "whip the guy's butt the second he touches the puck" kind of deal. And when in doubt, I'll go with the staggered defense.
Just level the guy with the puck. Litrell- I don't really know about strategies, I just move my strategies all the way to the right. I really couldn't tell you the purpose of the strategies. I do try to take a forward down to stop the 1T because the CPU is stupid and leaves you in a rough spot trying to stop it. 6-When building your HUT team what types of players do you like and what players do you have or have had on your teams? AlexD-
I like to find a happy medium of cost and talent. If I have shea Weber, THAT GUY IS MY CAPTAIN! He is a beast already but then add the 2 points with the captain card and he is a force of nature.
I like size down the middle - Getzlaf, Bugjstad, Speeza, with a small, quick guy on the 4th line like Helm or Kuznetsov.
StormsquallMCS- Speed, I always look for speed. I have had nearly every player. Probably my favorite cards I had was Bure, Ovi, Movember Seguin. Movember Rask, and Malkin. Litrell-
At the start of the HUT season i went off of nothing but Speed and Shooting ratings. The problem is the guys that are cheap that have high ratings are pussies. You can breath on them and they fall down. Once you get a little bit of coins you can get power forwards and two way forwards with good shooting and speed ratings. I have also noticed that goalies to a certain aspect and D players are pretty easy to go cheap on. Chara is the best D guy I had for awhile and he was going for 5K.
7-How do you use your training cards or enhancements to increase player attributes?
AlexD- If I have them, and I need a win, I'll use a plus 5 All on my goalie first. After that, it just depends on who I have on my team, what I have in my inventory and how willing I am to use my boost cards. Really, I'd say if you're going to boost anyone, boost the one guy who is going to be out there the whole time - your goalie. StormsquallMCS- I always boost my goalie with whatever I have from collections. Usually its a +4 of anything. Just something to give my goalie a extra boost. I don't usually boost my forwards or dman unless its the monthly playoffs. Then Ill boost them. Litrell- I never use them. With no duration cards this year they are a huge waste of time for me. I do rock a +5 goalie if I'm going for a division title or trying to stay in the division, but other than that i quick sell them when i get them. 8- Please describe some of your greatest wins and losses. AlexD- Greatest win recently would have to be when I came back from down 4-1 with 9 min to go. Blake Wheeler (Movember Blake wheeler), stepped it up big time. StormsquallMCS-
Greatest win had to be when
Trevpapp
challenged me to use
Niemi in a D1 game. I ended up blowing out my
opponent. Worst loss was when I lost to team with all
bronze guys, wasn't happy after that game.
Litrell- They seem to be the same on the opposite side. At the start of HUT it seemed like i was up 3-0 every game and always let guys back into it. But guys spent a lot of money on packs so they had way better players and that does make a difference. <--------Continued In Column 1
